How some personality traits can endanger a marriage

On Behalf of | Oct 16, 2018 | Divorce

There are certain personality traits that may increase the likelihood that a Kentucky resident might get a divorce. For example, all people are selfish sometimes, but people who are consistently selfish and always have to get their own way may be endangering their marriage.

Narcissists are even more selfish, seeing themselves as victims and refusing to ever take any responsibility for conflicts or problems in a relationship. It is difficult to remain in a marriage with a person who is like this. Another trait that can cause problems is a fragile ego. These people tend to be more motivated by external than internal factors, and the result can be that they are more likely to be unfaithful.

Catastrophizing refers to people blowing small incidents out of proportion. One attorney described couples in which one person would file for divorce over the other spouse coming home late from work only to dismiss the filing later. People who are materialistic may never be satisfied and always want to purchase more. This can cause problems in the marriage, particularly if the materialistic person feels the other spouse does not earn enough money. Being a caregiver may seem like a positive trait, but when people overdo it, they push others away by not needing them.

People may struggle to negotiate property division and child support with a partner who is narcissistic or catastrophizing or who has been unfaithful. However, negotiating can be less expensive than litigation, and it can give couples more control over how property is divided as well as the child custody schedule. Mediation can sometimes be a viable alternative as well.
