3 ways to avoid driving drunk this summer

Summertime brings an increase in backyard parties, vacations and gatherings with family and friends. These events usually mean there will be alcohol available.

Do not let the fun prevent you from making smart choices concerning alcohol. The last thing you want to worry about is a DUI. Do these three things to avoid driving drunk after your summer celebrations.

1. Choose wisely your designated driver

Having a designated driver may seem obvious, but you may not be aware that designated drivers are not always sober. In fact, 40 percent have alcohol in their systems, some to the point of severe impairment, according to a study from the University of Florida in Gainesville. Make sure your person of choice is alcohol free. If there is no safe person, call a taxi or spend the night at the host’s home if possible.

2. Eat smart

What is a summer gathering without delicious food? Make sure you have eaten something before you take your first sip. Keep in mind that what you eat plays a role in your blood alcohol level. Stay away from carbonated drinks, as they increase the speed of alcohol absorption. Go for foods with a high amount of fat or protein because they take longer to metabolize, thus slowing down absorption.

3. Limit your intake

The best way to guarantee you do not get a DUI is to not drink any alcohol at all. If that simply is not possible, then do the following to minimize how much you consume:

  •        Drink slowly and take breaks between drinks.
  •        Do not participate in drinking games.
  •        Carry a breathalyzer with you to monitor your BAC (portable tests may not be accurate, however).
  •        Allow some time for your body to process the alcohol before getting behind the wheel.

If you face DUI charges whether or not you tried these tips, speak to a criminal defense lawyer with experience in DUI cases. You want to avoid the serious penalties that come with a conviction.
